Summary

This book is about counting and subtraction. Pete the cat is wearing his favorite shirt that has four groovy buttons; he loves his shirt so much that he even sings a song “My buttons, my buttons, my four groovy buttons. My buttons, my buttons, my four groovy buttons.” While he was playing around one of his buttons popped off, but he did not cry because of that instead he continuous sing the song, but now he said “My buttons, my buttons, my three groovy buttons. The rest of the buttons continued to pop off of his favorite shirt but he kept on singing his song. So, at the end he lost all of his buttons and he looks down at his button less shirt and he finds out that he has his belly button.  At the ends of the book you will find a reflection sentence that teach the children that we will get stuff and we will lose it, but is not a reason for us to cry.

Rating

We can use this book from pre – K to second grade. I will give five stars to this book because it covers the basic math concepts, you can use it to teach such as addition, subtraction, colors, shapes, repetitive language and a positive way to deal with emotional situation.

Classroom Ideas

1.     We can use a big shirt with big button to represent Pete the Cat because at this age children learn better when they make connections between graph and ideas.

2.      We can ask the children if they are wearing anything that has buttons.

3.     Children can count their buttons and they can tell you the color and shape.

4.     We can ask the children to draw their favorite part of the story.

  3. I like this book very much. Last year we played the book video a lot for our first graders. We used it during math and literacy and the kids loved it. Not only does it help students learning things like subtraction and colors but also ,as you stated in your summary, has a good message at the end; "At the end of the day materials things are not important, so we do cry for them".......
